Spirit of Land and River
The wall mural at Lai Lai Art Gallery in Kuala Ampang, Selangor, called “Spirit of Land and River” embodies the essence of Malaysia’s harmony. Painted by the gallery owner, Alice Chang Oi Lai, and visiting British artist, Alice Stainthorpe, with contributions from ASWARA students, this vibrant mural uses Nippon Paints to bring its philosophy to life.

The mural features eight Malayan tigers, depicted in various playful poses, engaging with a papercut fish lantern. These tigers, painted in the pastel orange, exude strength and liveliness and strength. Their striking stripes come to life with a mix of pinks, purples and greens. Their powerful but playful figures stand against a dynamic blue background, creating a perfect contrast between movement and stability.
The fish, painted in white and red, symbolizes perpetual renewal, a creature in constant motion. Suspended on painted poles, the fish appears almost alive, flowing in an imaginary breeze.
