Ciputra Kasih Semarang School

Spreading the spirit of entrepreneurship to East Indonesia, Ciputra Education Group intended to inaugurate a new school complex, Sekolah Ciputra Kasih Makassar, Indonesia.
Situated on a 15.000 sqm area, the school complex features four academic buildings encircling three sides of the site, generating an expansive central courtyard facilitating communal activities for the students. One building mass was positioned at each end of the south and north wings, while two buildings were situated on the west wing.

This arrangement establishes a barrier between the main road and the commercial district on one side and the inner courtyard on the other, fostering privacy and safety for students’ activities inside from the bustling of the main road and the commercial district.

Colour Codes

The construction was divided into three phases. The first phase includes a drop-off area, the south wing academic building, and a temporary structure serving as a cafeteria. The drop-off area features five columns, each painted with four different colors: blue conveys positive encouragement, confidence, and security; yellow symbolizes optimism, curiosity, and high spirits, also creates a bright, lively, and happy environment; orange, a mixture between red and yellow, projects intensity, creativity, euphoria, and enthusiasm; and grey, lies exactly between white and black, gives contemporary and sophisticated feels. This color was complemented with white, giving a more slender and three-dimensional effect. Each color represents the entrepreneurship values, welcoming the students with an entrepreneurship spirit. The main gate adorned with vibrant blue, yellow, and orange in a triangular pattern, combined with black, serves as a visually striking focal point.

The main building boasts a neat plain geometry. The upper part was painted white, embodying honesty, cleanliness, sincerity, vigor, moderation, and love. White also represents flexibility as it can be used as a background for other colors. It acts like a blank canvas, ready for a new beginning. White can also significantly stimulate its user’s senses, paving the way for new inventions. Furthermore, the lower part was composed of a glass wall and a grey-painted wall in contrast to the white mass above to form an ideal background shade, elevating the white-painted mass above.
The building mass was split in the center by a corridor enclosed with a triangular aluminum composite panel, stacked to create a three-dimensional effect. Some panels were tilted upward into a hood shape to generate voids, allowing natural light and cross-ventilation in the corridors while reducing some unwanted rainwater that might enter the premises. Each triangle was painted blue, yellow, or orange to exhibit the spirit of entrepreneurship further to the audience outside the building.

The north and south facades are set as openings, providing well-lit and well-ventilated rooms. A series of full-height masonry fins painted with different colors for each side–yellow for the right, white for the front, and orange for the left–provide a dynamic, moving effect. Each corner of the building evokes a different ambiance and impression, which will hopefully ignite the curiosity among users to explore further.

"In this project, colours were used to represent the entrepreneurship values that were expected to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset among the students, teachers, and staff. It conducts the design beyond basic functionality, acting as a medium to encourage the client’s aim to not only enhance the educational standards nationwide but also enhance the life skills, characters, and interaction capabilities taught through the entrepreneurship program. It is also used to give particular architectural effects to the design."
