Dementia Friendly Wayfinding Project

Khatib Central and Chong Pang City have been identified as areas with an aging population.
In line with the Singapore government mandate to explore and enable aging in place, our project objective is to create an environment that allows seniors and those afflicted with dementia to move around their neighborhood safely and confidently.

On the back of research to ascertain the needs of the elderly and dementia patients, the proposed wayfinding solution comprises zoning the area by colour and symbol; identifying and developing a signage system that will allow easy navigation between homes and various amenities.

Colour Codes

Conducted on-site audits to understand traffic flows, pain points and challenges. Researched difficulties faced by the elderly and dementia patients when navigating. Researched history of the areas.
Primary colours ensure high contrast. Oversized fonts make for easy legibility from a distance. Simple icons help the colour blind to navigate effectively. Large directional arrows clearly indicate walking routes to and from amenities.

The resulting designs were floated for residents’ and user feedback prior to fabrication and installation.
